Congenital curvature of the penis is a condition that men have from birth (congenital). As described, the condition’s feature is a curvature of the penis, during erection. Often noticed from an early age, the condition does not alter or change over time. It is estimated that less than 1% of men experience penile curvature. It differs from Peyrione’s disease because of its congenital nature.

Diagnosis of congenital penis curvature

To diagnose congenital penis curvature, Mr Suks Minhas will talk through your medical and sexual history with you. This is often enough to determine a diagnosis of the condition. In some cases, an examination will be required while the penis is erect. This is achieved through an injection of vasoactive drugs to cause the erection.

Symptoms of congenital penis curvature

The most noticeable symptom is a curve in the shape of the penis during an erection. This feature of your penis will be as presentable as long as you have remembered as it will have affected you your whole life. Often realised during puberty or, sometimes, early adulthood, in some cases it causes pain. But is can most certainly cause problems relating to sexual intercourse, hence the common need for medical attention to the matter.

Treatment for congenital penis curvature

In many cases, the condition can be left untreated if that is what the patient decides. However, treatment is often required when the patient finds that the degree of curvature prevents them from having sexual intercourse. As this is a very common aspect to overall life enjoyment, it is obviously not unusual for a man to seek help when they are living with congenital penis curvature. When this is the case, surgical correction is required so that normal function and the form of the penis is established for the first time in the patient’s life.

The reconstructive procedure to treat congenital curvature of the penis involves exposing the penis. This is done to shorten the side of the penis opposite the curvature so that it is symmetrical to the other side.

Once the procedure has been carried out, the penis will be straighter when erect. And the patient can now enjoy a sex life without the pre-existing problem. The treatment is commonly carried out as a day case.
